The speech Senator Diane J. Savino gave, preceding the vote on Marriage Equality in Albany, NY yesterday, sums up America’s current Civil Rights movement beautifully…
Damn. 8 votes.
8 votes and Gay and Lesbian couples are still 2nd class citizens in a state that is usually a leader in Civil Rights.
8 votes and 1 from Senator Jim Alesi, even though he seems to vote “No” with intense agony over it…
Hopefully the Senate will be able to vote on this again soon. Until then…(?)

Senator Savino makes some very good points. Although I wish you would cover some other issues of the LGBTQ community than gay marriage. Comparatively to other issues facing the community this one isn’t that important. Such as the brutal slaughtering of gay teen Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado in Puerto Rico and the vigil held in Philadelphia on November 20th, also the same day that in Philadelphia was Transgender Day of Remembrance and a memorial was held at the William Way center in which a video displayed over 100 names of victims who were killed either because they were trans or people who didn’t live their lives by gender norms set by their culture in the past year. These over 100 names, were only the names that were REPORTED. It was also to remember those who were not reported or who killed themselves because they may not have had the proper support in their lives.
Also Tuesday Dec. 1st was World AIDS Day, a day to recognize those infected or affected with HIV/AIDS and to encourage EVERYONE to go out and get tested. I would like to see events like this posted on your blog instead of gay marriage, leave that to the liberal mainstream news. Isn’t this a blog for sub and/or counter cultures of Philly??
Maybe you can help with this, the Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting on Penn’s Campus Monday, I think some people are organizing counter protests. What do you think??
Just a suggestion.

I read this comment about an hour ago, and I can’t stop thinking about it… About what I could do… And what I will do go forward with the GLBTQ conversations I have on this blog.
Seriously, you are about the 10th person to say this… But it’s final hit me.
Thanks for waking me up… Stay tuned……………….
The gay marriage issue is VERY important and I’m glad to see
you touch on it here, however so briefly. this is a huge civil rights movement
and I would even love to see much more of the Philly lgbt community represented in your
blog and tweets. Weither it be in the arts, music, events, benefits, fundraising efforts and so on. Thx for the great posts. keep speaking up friend. -a
